When putting together a nursery, a crib is the most important piece of furniture in the room. While the crib should look good and complement the room décor, the primary goal is to choose one that is safe and comfortable.
Because purchasing a crib is an investment, make sure you select one that is safe and built to last. Ideally, select a model that grows with your child as their needs change.
Here are some helpful guidelines to keep in making when shopping for a crib.
Although tempting to use previously used or hand-me-down models, you have no idea how safe it is. Since 2011, crib manufacturers are required to adhere to strict safety guidelines as required by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
An older crib does not typically come with any kind of label telling you when it was manufactured or that it is in compliance with these safety standards. For obvious reasons, it is illegal to manufacture or sell a crib that does not meet minimum safety requirements. Better safe than sorry.
The bars or slats on the sides of the crib should be spaced at 2-3/8” apart or less. Any more space will allow your baby to slide their arms, legs or even head through the slats, resulting in serious injury.
No Drop Rails
The crib should have solid slides that stay in place, and anything with a drop rail is dangerous.
The simpler the design, the better. Any design element of the crib with corners or elaborate decorative features just increases the risk of entrapment or injury.
Once the crib is assembled, give it the “wobble test.” Shake it from all angles to make sure there is no movement, and that stays firmly in place whether on bare floors or carpet. If the crib has wheels, make sure the wheels are securely locked in place.
After assembly, perform a thorough inspection of the crib, both inside and out, for exposed hardware. All nails or screws should be hidden from sight. Check also for peeling paint, splinters or any other safety concern that has the potential for choking or other injury.
Allow 26” from the top of the mattress to the crib rail. As your baby grows, the mattress will need to be lowered.
Inside the Crib
Do not use crib pads, also known as bumper pads, because they don’t do much to prevent any injuries and in fact increase the odds of suffocation, strangulation or choking or getting stuck or trapped.
Do not leave extra pillows or blankets, stuffed animals and/or toys in the crib, especially if unattended. Although cute, these items have the potential to cause harm and injury due to choking or suffocation.
Proper Size and Fit
The mattress should fit snugly into the crib, with no room for spaces or gaps between the mattress and crib walls/sides. It should be firm and not give way to the baby’s weight or dip in the middle or sides. Gaps are hazardous because the baby can slide arms and legs in the gaps and be injured or stuck.
The mattress should be firm and give your baby all the comfort and support needed. Avoid using extra support items like rolled blankets, pillows or bulky bedding. Never use extra bulky or soft item that could be smothering hazards.
There is no set age to change over from a crib to a toddler bed, but you will know when your child is ready to make the switch. Usually, if your child is actively trying to escape from the crib on his own, it’s time. Although different for every child, this generally happens around the 18-month mark.
As you transition from crib to a toddler bed, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Remove any sides or parts of the crib that is no longer required with the toddler bed. Here are things to check:
Lower the mattress accordingly. More than likely, you will set the mattress into the lowest position. Make sure that your child will not fall or have to jump out of their bed. The lower the mattress is to the ground, the better.
Double check to make sure the mattress is in place and there are no spaces or gaps against the sides of the bed.
A safe bet is to purchase a mattress that was specifically designed to be used with the brand of crib or toddler bed you purchased. Babyletto offers a complete line of safe, comfortable mattresses, sheets and dressers that perfectly compliment your Babyletto crib.
Check to make sure the toddler rails around the bed are sturdy and properly in place. Toddler rails are in place to prevent falling out of bed during sleep.
Make sure the bed stays in place. Check to make sure the bed doesn’t move easily, wobble, and stands up to more active toddler activities like jumping and bouncing on the bed.
